 | “Spotlighting the sidelines” - November 2009 The spotlights of the world of gay and lesbian cinema were all trained on Saint Etienne for 4 days of exceptional encounters. For its fifth edition, the FACE à FACE [FACE to FACE] festival proposed not only a programme of LGBT themed films (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), but also a special event: The 1st National Gay and Lesbian Cinema Sessions . Invited to Saint Etienne for the first time ever, the organisers of the 12 LGBT cinema festivals exchanged views on their projects, their specifics and their difficulties, and so testify to the vibrant richness of the gay community. |
In parallel with these professional encounters, the fifth festival opened its doors to the Saint Etienne public and numerous other visitors, who met the film directors and celebs, there to talk about their work. All those concerned participated in a public debate on gay and lesbian cinema specifics. As part of the fight against discrimination there was a special session for high schoolers , with the help of the Ministry of Health. And there was of course the vibrantly festive and friendly evenings that FACE à FACE fans so enjoy. In addition to the traditional opening and closing nights, the ‘Opération du Saint Esprit’ [‘Operation of the Holy Spirit’], an irresistible comedy by the Parisian company Les Emplumés, picked out by FACE à FACE at the 2009 Avignon Festival was played at the Saint Etienne Opera Theatre. | |

| The programming allows each of the invited festivals to present 3 ‘cartes blanche’, in other words, to show their favourite films. And there will of course be the vibrantly festive and friendly evenings that FACE à FACE fans so enjoy. In addition to the traditional opening and closing nights, this year will see the ‘Opération du Saint Esprit’ [‘Operation of the Holy Spirit’], an irresistible comedy by the Parisian company Les Emplumés, picked out by FACE à FACE at the 2009 Avignon Festival. It will be playing one night only on Friday 27 November, at the Saint Etienne Opera Theatre. The official ‘Etoiles et Toiles’ soirée will be taking place on Saturday 28 November at the prestigious Zenith, as an after-show to the concert of Calogéro. FG Design will be up there on the star catwalk, and first time ever in the provinces, the AQUAHOMO-Paris athletes! A many-splendoured festival that will light up the sky, just like the leaves of the synthetic tree at Chateaucreux Station , which FACE à FACE has chosen as a symbol, under the benevolent gaze of its creator. | _____________________________ (FACE A FACE
